Graphic Organizers for Reading Strategies

Several people have provided good feedback on www.newsela.com, the leveled news articles website I shared a couple of weeks ago.  Please share how your are using it in your classrooms.  Let's get stronger by learning from each other.

Lee Wright, 7th grade science teacher at SAMS, recently emailed me this site with several graphic organizers:  http://pacehighschool.net/Documents/GraphicOrganizersforReading.pdf .  She is working hard to have appropriate resources to support literacy in her classroom.  Lee was excited for me to share with all of you, so please thank her for the resource!

  1. Each week I assign a new article for students to read. My goal is for students to have read and interacted with 30+ articles by the end of the year. Students are required to read, annotate, and write a one-page reflection about the assigned article. I select articles based on various factors, including what students are studying in other classes and what is happening around the world. I believe it is important for students to be exposed to various types of writing, especially texts that they will often see in their everyday life. One obstacle has been the lack of differentiated articles--however, this week I used an article from www.newsela.com and hope to see a better pairing between my students' reading ability and the article they are discovering.

    1. Mrs. Curry, I like to hear how your work with informational text is also giving students an opportunity to write and make connections to other classes. I hope newsela.com will help you with your goals for using news articles. I posted a few more resources on my reply to Ms. Macaulay.

  2. NewsELA has been an excellent resource for me in my Social Studies classes. It is highly important for students to be engaged in what is going on in our county, state, country, and world on an everyday basis in order to develop globally aware learners. We use NewsELA to find out what is going on, but also reflect and connect it to events we have studied in US history. The students have a choice of 5 articles to read and annotate, then write a summary of the article with at least one connection to history. So far, the students seem engaged and excited about learning whats going on around them. I can't wait to use NewsELA more! Thanks so much for sharing the resource!

    1. Thank you Ms Macaulay for sharing how newsela.com is being used in your classroom! Kelly Gallagher, an expert in literacy education, has a huge archive of articles he uses with students. Here is the link to his 2013-2014 list: http://kellygallagher.org/resources/articles.html. There is a link to his archive at the bottom of page. Also check out The Learning Network (http://learning.blogs.nytimes.com/) for lessons using The New York Times and Tween Tribune (http://tweentribune.com/).
